Huffing for Stuffing: A Run Oregon preview of the 2019 ORRC Turkey Trot

It’s time again for the age-old tradition of calorie mitigation–participating in a run on Thanksgiving so that all the turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie and your mother-in-law’s “secret casserole” can be consumed guilt free.

The Oregon Road Runners Club hosts a popular Turkey Trot at the Oregon Zoo. The event is untimed and perfect for the whole family, no matter what your walking or running pace may be. There is also a half-mile Tot Trot for kids under eleven years old. The lovely out-and-back course is paved roads or paths and features a mix of flat and hills. It starts at the Forestry Center, winds through the Washington Park and the Japanese Gardens, and ends at the zoo. There are four wave-starts to ease course congestion for the 3,500 participants. The first wave (starting at 8:00am) is for runners only, followed by a walkers-only wave and two additional mixed waves. The Tot Trot is also staggered, with the first wave starting at 9:30am. Costumes are encouraged, as is the post-race pumpkin pie and it’s a baby-jogger friendly event. Approximately $25,000 of entry fees go to benefit the Oregon Zoo, so you can feel good about this event on multiple levels.

Technical shirts are not included in registration but will be available to purchase on the day of the event. Each 4-mile participant receives an awesome Turkey Trot At The Zoo finisher medal and the chance to win one of 150 pumpkin pies.

Discounted tickets to the zoo will be available for participants after the event, starting at 8a. Riding the MAX to the zoo stop is strongly encouraged. Be sure to use TriMet’s Trip Planner, since the MAX will be on a Sunday schedule for the holiday.

And for any non-runners in your life, there is a great need for volunteers. If you’re interested in volunteering for this event, please check out availability here.

There is also a family discount and a discount for members of the ORRC. Here is a link to register for the 2019 ORRC Turkey Trot. Refer 5 or more participants and get a refund of up to $20 of your registration cost.
