Race Preview: 2019 Silver Falls Trail Runs 50k/Marathon/Half Marathon/7 Miler/5k (Silverton)

There’s a reason that the Silver Falls Trail Races, brought to you by Run Wild Adventures, sell out every year. Last year, I got to run the Half Marathon and it was my favorite race of the year, and there were a lot of them to choose from. This year, I’ve registered again, and if I’m willing to sign up for a race that’s likely going to occur in blustery Pacific Northwest November weather, it’s gotta be a good one.

This year the 2019 Silver Falls Trail Runs 50k/Marathon/Half Marathon/7 Miler/5k will be on the weekend of November 1st through the 3rd. Friday the 1st will be the 5k trail run which will start at 5:00PM. November 2nd will be the 50k Trail Ultra at 7:30AM, the Trail Marathon, which starts at 8:00AM, and the 7 mile trail run which begins at 9:00AM. Last but certainly not least, the Half Marathon will take place on Sunday the 3rd in two waves 15 minutes apart.  Those who estimate finishing in 2:15 and under should run at 9:00AM and those who think that they might finish later can register for the 9:15AM wave. Walkers are welcome to join in the half marathon, the 7 miler, or the 5k.

This trail race takes place at Silver Falls State Park in Silverton, and you won’t find more beautiful trails to travel on. Not only will you get to see some gorgeous waterfalls, but you’ll get to run under them as well. All of the information about the courses, the aid station locations, and cut off times can be found on the website here. There will also be plenty of porta potties as well as a large park bathroom.

There will not be a bag check at packet pick-up but there will be a drop area for the 50k, the marathon, and the half marathon. It will be located at mile 3.3 and it’s a great spot to ditch any of the clothes that kept you warm at the start line before you got all sweaty. You could also opt to pack something warm and dry for after the race, because you’ll likely get wet and dirty out on those trails.

With the above being said, you should consider embracing bad weather if you’re going to run this race. It’s rained every year of this event so far, and it’s cold, so be prepared for that! Silver Falls Trail Runs will continue rain or shine!

Ultra food will be at aid stations for the full marathon and 50k only. Typical things like Hammer gels, fruit, potatoes, candy, chips and other snacks will be available for those races. All aid stations for all distances will have water and Heed Electrolyte on hand.

In an effort to be kinder to the environment, please consider bringing your own drinking vessel to the race. Volunteers can refill your hydration device at one of the aid stations and there will be much less waste if everyone does their part.

The cost for this race is $75 for the 50k, $65 for the marathon, $55 for the half marathon, $45 for the 7 miler, and $30 for 5k. All parking and day use fees at the park will be covered for participants and volunteers. Tech material shirts can be purchased during registration or in limited supply on the day of the event for $20 CASH ONLY. A portion of race proceeds will go to the Drakes Crossing Rural Fire Department as well as help maintain park restoration.

There will be some great post race food and refreshments after the events, so stick around and celebrate! There will be a beer garden with local craft beers, hot soup or stew, bread, fruit, various snacks and coffee (first come, first serve!)

There will be awards for the various age group winners and some sponsor swag will be raffled off as well. The overall winner of each race gets a free entry to next year’s event!. Custom finisher medals will be given to all finishers (with the exception of the 5k.)

You can’t register for the race this year, but you can put it on your radar to run it next year, which is what I did to get in for 2019. Spots go fast, as there is a limit on participants out on the trails, which is to your benefit. There’s a special use permit granted by Oregon Parks & Rec, and capping the race helps maintain the trails and prevents too much congestion out there. Only 200 marathon and 200 50k participants are allowed on Saturday, as well as 600 7 miler runners/walkers. Sunday’s half marathon has a limit of 1200 participants, and this distance fills very quickly. 300 participants are allowed in the Friday 5k, and there are still a few spots left as of now.

Whether you’re new to trail racing or just looking for your next adventure, the Silver Falls Trail Races is a great option! Set your calendar for the beginning of August when registration for 2020 begins!!
