Race Preview: 2019 Girlfriends Run for a Cure Half/10k/5k on October 13th (Vancouver, WA)

Why Racing Events’ Girlfriends Run for a Cure will include a Half Marathon , 10k, and 5k on Sunday, October 13th in Vancouver at 9am. This event has raised a ton of money since it’s inception to support Joleen Skarberg in her fight against breast cancer. Skarberg will be back again this year wearing her #1 bib.

The courses are flat and fast with stretches along the Columbia River and through historic Fort Vancouver. There will be a lot of pink and mostly ladies running this event, though some lucky (and brave) men will join along as part of the Pink Brigade. Members of the Pink Brigade have earned their place among the ladies, donating or fundraising at least $500 for the Pink Lemonade Project.

This is a chip timed event, but the focus is more about the journey to the finish line instead of how fast you can cross it. There will be plenty of speedy ladies and men, if competition is your thing, but this run is very inclusive. Firefighters line the finish chute and pass out the finisher necklace. There will be chocolate, toffee, cupcakes and some savory treats at the finish area. Whole Foods will be serving soup and other post-race goodies and Deschutes Brewery will have a tent to help celebrate. All participants receive a finisher necklace and women’s running shirt, no boxy unisex shirts.

There will be awards for the Top Overall Three Champions and Masters Champion for the Quarter and Half Marathon as well as awards for the Top 3 Women in each age group. According to the race director, “about half the gals run, half walk, and many do a combination of running and walking. It doesn’t matter how you get to the finish line, as long as you get there.” The Girlfriends Run for a Cure Half and Quarter Marathon is a great way to celebrate women, girlfriends and survivors. It’s an added bonus that this fun morning helps raise money for Breast Cancer Research, care, treatment, and a cure. This is an annual event for many of our blogger who look forward to it every year. They love all the pink, the swag is pretty spectacular and no details are overlooked. But most of all I love the heart of this event. This is more than just another run, it’s like a girls’ morning out, but for an important cause.
