Race Preview: 2019 Monkey Face Half Marathon and 7-Mile Run (Smith Rock)

Monkey Face Half Marathon and 7 Mile Run is scheduled for Saturday, September 21st at Smith Rock State Park in Terrebonne, just north of Bend. Known for its unique rock formations and gorgeous surroundings, this area attracts hikers and rock climbers. While popular with outdoor enthusiasts, there aren’t many events that take advantage of this Central Oregon gem, so this is a unique opportunity. The Half Marathon is completely on trails and consists of two loops along the Smith Rock State Park trail system. The 7-Mile course starts from Rim Rock Trail next to the parking lot and takes runners along the Misery Ridge Trail. Both courses will have views of Monkey Face, a popular rock formation that resembles just that and will offer plenty of aid stations along the way.

The Half Marathon begins at 8am and the 7-Mile Run/Walk starts at 10am from Smith Rock State Park (9241 NE Crooked River Drive). The Half Marathon costs $65 and the 7-Miler costs $40.  Registration will also be available at packet pick up on Friday, September 20th at the Bend FootZone (842 NW Wall St.) from 4pm-6pm. Day of registration and packet pick up will be between 7am-9:45am at the start/finish are in Smith Rock State Park near the information yurt.

Eclectic Edge Racing will provide chip timing and awards will be given for the top 3 male and female finishers in each age group. There is a 4 hour time limit for the Half Marathon and the course will remain open until noon. Half Marathon finishers will receive a custom medal and all participants are invited for the post race refreshments provided by Pink Buffalo Racing. Runners/Walkers 21 and over can enjoy a complimentary pint of Deschutes Brewery beer at the park.

Parking will be limited, so make sure to carpool. A day pass is included with registration and will be given out at packet pick up. Spectators should plan to pay $5. With the sunrise just after 6am, the views will be amazing and the temperatures are usually pretty comfortable this time of year. This event is a great opportunity to take in the trails and sights of Central Oregon!
