Race Preview: 2019 MLK Dream Run (PDX)

For the second year in a row, the MLK Dream Run has a new start and finish, but continues to honor the Martin Luther King Jr. ‘I have a Dream’ speech with a 5k, 10k or 15k that benefits the NNEBA Fellows Youth Entrepreneurship Program. This event celebrates the revitalization of the Soul of Portland and honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr with an urban run an opportunity to carry on his legacy. Participants will start and finish Portland Community College’s Cascade Campus on Sunday, September 8th. Runners/Walkers will start in waves and the course is chip timed as well as USATF certified.

All participants will receive post race goodies, including a beer from Widmer Bros Brewing, for those 21 and over, raffle tickets to win prizes and a swag bag full of discounts.  The winner in each division over 21 will win their weight in Widmer Beer. Music, food and entertainment will be at the finish line until 11:00am. Tillamook grilled cheese sandwiches on Dave’s Killer Bread will be waiting at the finish line too and entertainment will be along the course AND at the after party.

The Soul District Business Association is a non-profit, formally known as NNEBA that puts on the annual MLKDR. The MLK Dream Run funds our Soul District Fellows Internship, which features program partnerships such as Green Lighting Black Lives Matter Youth Media Project and Summer Works. The ultimate goal is to prepare students, entering the workforce and mentor them toward pathways to success.

Secondly, the Saturday before the Sunday Run will also feature live music, products, and services from local businesses big and small in our vendor village. We hope this event brings people together to celebrate the N/NE community noted for its rich ethnic diversity.

This is a great opportunity to help the community and keep the dream alive. It’s also a chance to run in a fun Portland spot that doesn’t offer a lot of organized running events. Run it to get inspired or to help others, either way everyone wins.
