In a running world where most races will cost you more than your weekly grocery budget for a family of four, it is amazing to find a race that instead costs about three coffee drive-thru’s.
The 4-mile, 15K, and half marathon distances at Sunset Bay Trail Runs are just $25, and even cheaper if you are a student or SCRC member. $25 to run through forest trails along the Oregon Coast. The race directors have focused on the experience instead of the stuff to keep the event that cheap. That means ribbons for the top three finishers and age-group winners, shirts for purchase, and raffle prizes donated by local businesses. Instead of souvenirs, they want you to instead take home memories of the course:
“Seriously, this race has it all, killer hills through the woods, and an amazing flat cliff section where you’ll see sea lions, rocks, the deep blue sea, and if you’re very lucky, a passing whale.”
Participants are warned that this is a tough course and they should be wise in preparing for the trails. For those not up for the challenge but want the beach life, there is a free 1-mile Beach Fun Run. So everyone can get their toes into the sand on the last Saturday in August.
