Race Preview: 2019 Steens Rim Run & Walk (Frenchglen)

Running a race, even a hard race, with a stellar view is always worth the journey getting to the finish line. The 37th Annual Chris Miller Memorial Steens Rim Run & Walk, also known simply as the “Rim Run,” is one of those unforgettable races. This 10k will not be “just a 10k.” In fact, many have said it to be the toughest 10k in Oregon, with a steep climb pretty much from start to finish. It will surely challenge you with a starting elevation of 7,830 feet and a finish above 9,730 feet. The remote Steens Mountain in SE Oregon will literally take your breath away.

This high altitude race, always the first Saturday of August, will be held on August 3rd this year. The surface of the course is a well-maintained gravel road. You’ll follow the Steens Mountain Loop Road and pass Fish Creek and the Little Blitzen. You’ll be running on the edge of the rim and staring out onto spectacular mountain views. The race will end at the East Rim Overlook with views of the Alvord Desert below. Check out the course profile here.

The weather has been very unpredictable for this race as well. It’s typically pretty nice and sunny but there’s no guarantee, especially near the top, where it has been hot (75+ degrees) and cold (3 inches of snow one year!) Come prepared for anything and remember to pack a sweater or jacket to wear at the top after your finish.

Once you finish the race, there will be vehicles to get you back down to the bottom again. Your family and friends are welcome to come to the finish to cheer for you, but they must arrive at the top by 9:15AM before the road closes for the race.

Are you ready for your next adventure? The hills await you!!
