Race Preview: 2019 Beacon Rock 50k & 25k

The Columbia River Gorge is a fantastic backdrop for a race, and there’s an awesome adventure coming up on Saturday, August 3rd. The 2019 Beacon Rock 50k & 25k is a Rainshadow Running event, and they put on scenic and memorable races. The 25k is currently sold out with no waiting list, but there are still some slots left for the 50k and there’s a free kids 1k. If you’re seriously bummed that you can’t register for the 25k, (and really you should be,) you’ll want all the details for next year so you can get on it sooner. There’s also an option to transfer bibs.

Both distances start and finish at the Beacon Rock State Park group campsite, which is about a 45-60 minute drive from Portland and near North Bonnerville, WA. They follow the same course, with the 50k following two 25k loops. If you want to check out course details, click on this link. All the best trails the park has to offer are here, including Hardy Ridge, Hardy Creek, and Hamilton Mountain. Check out views of Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams and of course the whole Columbia Gorge. The 25k has two large climbs and about 3700 feet of gains. There are also two long downhills. The 50k will challenge you to about 7500 feet of gains aAnd you’ll have twice the ascents and descents of the 25k. The trails are well maintained and there’s a bit of pavement at the beginning and end of each loop.

The kid’s race is less than 1 kilometer and the course is a small loop on the edge of the group camp site. Parents can run with kids if they wish to, and the event is totally free. There is a waiver for the kid’s run that must be signed in order to participate.

As far as cutoffs go, you’ll be granted 9 hours to complete the 50k and 7 hours for the 25k. There will be 5 fully stocked aid stations for the 50k, and there’s drop bag access at mile 15.5. There is NO drop bag option for the 25k and there will be 2 full aid stations for this distance. There will be a very small supply of cups, so please plan on bringing your own drinking vessel. There will be Ultra Aspire collapsible cups for sale for $5 each.  There will be water, Nuun, PB&J sandwiches, fruit, chips, pickles, and cookies and candy at the stations. Some gels will be available too, but in limited supply, so please plan to bring your own. There will also be first aid supplies, sunscreen, bug spray, and feminine hygiene products available.

Dubbed “Summer Camp for Adults,” there’s fun to be had at Beacon Rock. Free camping is available at the start/finish area and there will be a group BBQ/Potluck there that Friday night. After your race on Saturday, there will be craft beers and wood-fired pizza from Pizza Jim & Co waiting for you. There will also be a slip ‘n slide, lawn games, and a bonfire and live bluegrass music. Camp out all night and enjoy the atmosphere before getting a well earned night of sleep.  Sunday will be the final clean-up, which you are welcome to participate in. And at noon, a group hike to a secret swimming hole will be taking place.
