I had never heard about Silverton until I moved here for college, and even then it seemed like it was a world away from Salem. Upon venturing to it and spending time in it, I discovered many quaint shops, restaurants and outdoor activities that could be done there! Silverton is a cute little town on the outskirts of Salem that was established in 1854 and is considered Oregon’s “Garden City” as it is the home of the Oregon Gardens. Due to it’s historic nature, the city has had many famous people who have called it home through the years. One such person is Homer Davenport, a world famous political cartoonist in the 1900’s, and every year the city puts on a multi-day celebration in his honor. One of the many activities during this celebration is Homer’s Classic Fun Run. If you are looking for small town fun, this is a great event that has been going on since 1983! The race has also historically benefitted youth running programs in Silverton and other nearby small towns.
The Homer’s Classic Fun Run offers two options for your choosing – 8K and a 2 mile run/walk. The 8k course is flat, fast and has runners going through the Gallon House Covered Bridge, the only original covered bridge in Marion County. The 2 mile run/walk features a scenic out and back course with views of the great country farm lands surrounding the town. Another unique aspect of these races is that they both finish on the high school track, so the last 300m you will be finishing to the cheers of the crowd just like you were racing in the big time!
Awards are given to the top 3 runners in age group, top 10 runners in the 2 mile run and trophies to overall and masters winners. All runner are entered into a raffle that will be held after the run, so don’t dash off too fast afterwards! You’ll definitely want to enjoy some free watermelon slices and Mexican pastries before going to check out the other festivities going on around the city! Make a day of it!
