Reminder: SW5k is this Sunday in Beaverton – and it’s only $10

The SW5k (formerly the SW Bible 5k) is this Sunday night and it’s only $10 to sign up. Registration includes BBQ dinner after the race, but online registration is only open through July 11.

This race has been growing the past few years, and there’s now a large competitive contingent as well as a good number of walkers, making it great for participants of all paces. The route is not really a “walk in the park,” although part of it does go through a park – the Powerline Trail and Murrayhill Park. The balance of the course is through the SW Beaverton neighborhood, where much of the sidewalks are under shady trees. There are a number of hills on the course, but nothing you can’t handle, and there are nice downhills as well. The best part is the finish when you’re running down Weir and then get to turn into the church parking lot before climbing Weir back up to Murray.

The SW5k evening starts at 4:30p with the start for walkers, followed by the 5k run start at 5p. From 5p-6p, there will be all kinds of fun lawn games set up including bocce ball, mini soccer, volleyball, and more. Once the 5k is completed, there will be an awards ceremony, where the top three male and female participants will be given medals and age group winners will be recognized. That will be followed by the 1-mile family/kids run. (This was reported incorrectly originally!) Participants are invited to stick around after the race ceremony for an outdoor church service.

Typically, most race participants cheer on others in their group and then stake out a spot on the grass, hamburger and chips in hand. You can also bring a picnic if you’d like anything more, and you’re welcome to bring a blanket or chairs to sit on, but the grass is really nice and comfortable, especially after those hills. It’s a really relaxing and friendly vibe, and I love it!

Here are the vitals – and remember – sign up by the 11th!

We started the Run Oregon blog in February 2007, because felt like running in Oregon and SW Washington deserved more positive coverage. We also wanted to level the playing field so that small, non-profit races could compete with big events; and to support local race organizers.
