If you enjoy running the back roads, the Catherine Creek Classic will provide you with that experience. Starting just outside the small eastern Oregon town of Union, this classic event is known as one of the most scenic races around.
Choose from a half marathon, 5K, or 1 mile distance and enjoy the beauty of Union County. As these courses are point to point, participants will park at Union High School then take the bus to their start line and run back to the high school. (See website for bus schedule.) There are no bathrooms available at the start of the races, so plan ahead! Half marathon runners will have a chance to use the restrooms at Catherine Creek State Park on their way to the start line – or just past the 5 mile mark during the race. Water stations will be available every 3 miles, but August in eastern Oregon can be quite warm, so you may want to bring your own hydration, as well.
After the races, awards will be given to the top 3 finishers in each age group, and the overall winners back at Union High School.
At just $25, this half marathon is one of the most affordable half marathons around! If you’ve never been to this area, I encourage you to take a little road trip and enjoy the calm quietness of the Catherine Creek area. While I’ve never been able to run this race, I love this area and would truly enjoy running in the serene beauty that is Union County.
