Race Preview: 2019 Wy’East Howl 50K (Mt. Hood)

Surprisingly, Run Oregon has multiple ultra marathon veterans on our blogging staff. It has been years since we had even a single ultra runner writing for us, and it has been amazing and motivating to read of their escapades. I still want to get to the point of at least one ultramarathon, but until then I will stick to my distance of choice – the half. So when the folks at Daybreak Racing announce that the Wy’East Howl was adding a 13.1 distance to their 2nd annual event in 2019, I was stoked! Our blogger Bobi Jo ran the inaugural 50k last year and it was one that she absolutely toughed out. There were 8000 feet of climbing and her sanity and mental fortitude were tested along the way. She ended up finishing and still talks about it to this day.

The 2019 has some modifications from last year. The race has added both a 100k and a half marathon option (which I will be tackling) and the race has moved from September to July. Also, the 50k course will be modified to be a little less grueling (“only” 6500 feet of gain and 5100 feet of loss).

The 50k is a point to point that should prove pretty diverse with different types of running areas – from meadows of flowers to multiple types of forests. The majority of the course will be singletrack trails, as well as a few more technical sections and creek crossings.  The 100k will be an out-and-back of the 50k course. The half will start and finish at Mount Hood Meadows and feature a figure-8 route configuration with 2650 feet of climbing and downhill. You definitely won’t get bored on any of these distances.

After the event, there will be a post race meal, beverages and live music. There will also be sweet custom awards and a raffle giveaway.

See you out there!
