Race Preview: 2019 Independence Day Half Marathon/5k/10k (Champoeg State Park)

On the morning of July 4th, there are many races to choose from that promise a fun, festive atmosphere. One of my favorites, which I have run several times in past years, is Run With Paula’s Independence Day Run at Champoeg State Park just south of the Portland Metro area. The 8am start time gets ahead of the heat of the day, and with a 5k, 10k, and half marathon to choose from, there’s a distance for everybody.

The races start and end at the Riverside Pavillion on the west end of the park. There is plenty of parking in the lots and in designated fields, but a day-use access pass to Champoeg State Park costs $5 per vehicle, so consider carpooling. The pavilion offers some protection from the elements should it decide to rain or be exceptionally hot. Packet pickup is available on Wednesday, July 3 at Portland Running Company in Beaverton, or starting at 6:30am on race day. The races are open to participants of all ages and speeds, but due to the nature of the course, strollers and dogs are not allowed.

Our course starts on the gravel road near Riverside Pavilion at Champoeg State Park.  Both 5K and 10K are out and back courses and run on the paved bike path and road. The Half Marathon follows the 10K route and then repeats with an extended out and back on the bike path and Schuler Rd. Well marked course with great volunteers and aid stations featuring Gatorade Endurance (at Pump Station Aid Station).
