Race Preview: 2019 Timberline Marathon & Half Marathon (Timothy Lake)

My family went camping at Timothy Lake last summer, and I managed to get away for a couple of hours to run around the entire lake. It was really beautiful and unlike many trails in Oregon, relatively flat. It’s a great backdrop for a race and the 2019 Timberline Marathon and Half Marathon is coming up on the weekend of June 15th.

You’ll have two chances to run the half marathon, as there’s one on Saturday the 15th and another on Sunday the 16th. The full marathon will be on that Saturday. All races will begin at the Historic Clackamas Ranger Station and all will loop around Timothy Lake on single track trails. You’ll have views of Mt. Hood to keep you entertained, not to mention the lake itself, which is simply beautiful in the summer. Check out the course here.

There is a 6½ hour cutoff for the marathon and a 4 hour cutoff for the half marathon, and walkers are permitted for the half but not the full marathon due to course support limitations. There will be 3 aid stations on the course with water, Gatorade, and toilets available. Since there are areas of the course that are not easy to get support to, it is advised that you carry your own hydration and nutrition. The first aid station will not be available until approximately 6.25 miles into the race.  Also, since this is a remote location, medical facilities are quite a distance away, so if you’re allergic to bees or could require medication for any reason, it would be wise to bring it in case of an emergency.

Parking will be located along Skyline Road 42 south of the Historic Clackamas Ranger Station near the start/finish line. Please don’t park along the north side of the ranger station or in the campgrounds unless you are a registered guest.

The entry fee of $70 for the full marathon and $65 for the half marathon will also cover a custom finisher medal and a commemorative tech fabric shirt. Awards will go to the top three finishers in gender as well as age group winners.

Registration is limited to 400 entries per day and this race has a history of selling out. There is no waiting list and online registration closes on June 12th. Mail in entries must be received by June 10th, so don’t wait too long for this one!!
