How much would you pay for a half marathon? And how much would you donate to help high school athletes get the shoes and buses they need to participate? And how much would you spend for a Saturday morning in White Salmon?
Put those numbers together and you have the cost of the White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon and 4-miler.
There is no cost for the event. Instead participants are asked to donate ($25 recommended minimum) for the White Salmon Cross Country Boosters and the Columbia Gorge Running Club Student Scholarship Fund. This is the 12th annual event and proceeds go to help the Columbia High School Cross Country team. Along with supporting their participation in events, the funds also go toward a college scholarship to continue supporting these student athletes. After 300 participants last year, race leaders are hoping for even more this summer.
The 4-mile and half marathon use “lollipop courses” with a road portion at the beginning and end to connect with the trail. The half marathon is described as challenging with a significant climb that will get participants some amazing views of the Columbia River. Three aid stations will be on the course and participants are encouraged to bring water bottles. Views from last year, and more details can be found through their Facebook page.
