Race Preview: Inaugural Wild Outback 50K (Paisley)

Our friends at Alpine Running have added another ultra to their lineup of great events: the Wild Outback 50K! This inaugural event will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2019 in the remote Oregon outback near Paisley, OR on the Fremont National Rec Trail. It both looks and sounds stunning.

It’s a point-to-point course with 95% single track trail and 5% dirt road, taking racers through alpine meadows and along ridgelines with amazing views. There is ~4,700 feet of gain and ~5,700 feet of loss, at an average elevation of 6,000 feet.

Here’s a quick description from their website and an elevation profile:

The first 6 miles will mostly be running among Ponderosa Pines and through small alpine meadows. As the miles start to add up, the views just get better. Views of Abert Rim off to the east as well as panoramic views along the ridge at many locations. Just before aid station 3, you will gain Morgan Butte – the site of an old fire lookout. After hitting aid station 3, you will gradually descend over the next 6 miles to Chewaucan Crossing (the finish) among wildflowers, alpine meadows, and vast expanses leaving you wanting more miles to run.

There are 3 fully stocked aid stations (miles 6, ~14, ~24) with typical ultra fare: Water, Tailwind electrolyte drink, PB&Js, cookies, candy, chips, etc. There will be crew access at AS2, but sorry, no drop bags, pacers, or doggos allowed in this one.

There is a pre-race pasta dinner on Friday night that will include packet pickup and racers, family, crew, and volunteers are encouraged to come ($10 donation is suggested; proceeds benefit the Paisley HS track and XC teams)! Even if you don’t plan to eat, be sure to come get your packet, as there will be no race-day bib pickup.

A big update to those registered already, and an FYI to those wanting to sign up: there *will be a shuttle* to the start line! The shuttle will leave the finish line at Chewaucan Crossing at 6:30AM to transport runners to the start line at Cox Pass. A big thank you to the Paisley school and drivers! Runners, please arrive on time to make the shuttle, as it is about an hour ride out to the start. There will be a truck to transport any jackets, etc. back to the finish.

I’m really looking forward to running this event in just under a month – hope to see you there!
