Washougal Small Races: 2019 Run to Remember 1M/5k/10k/Half Marathon and WSF Student Stride for Education 5k

If you are looking for an event on the weekend after Mother’s Day, there are two wonderful small(ish) races in Washougal, Washington. On Saturday, May 18, The Washougal Schools Foundation raised funds for the districts’ schools at the WSF STRIDE for Education. The morning starts with a community 5k run and walk at 8am, followed by shorter distance runs for children in grades Kindergarten through 5 (first wave at 9am), and culminating with a 400m Kiddy Dash at 10:45am. The 5k route starts and ends at the Washougal High School stadium and parking lot and takes participants through nearby neighborhoods. Race participants receive an event t-shirt, finisher’s medal, and post-race water and snacks. Proceeds from the event fund programs and projects in the school district. Pre-registration has closed, but you can register on the day of the event starting at 7:30am.

On Sunday, May 19th, Why Racing Events is hosting the 4th annual Run to Remember 5k/10/Half Marathon in downtown Washougal. The event honors current and former military service members and remembers those who have fallen. First up is the Memorial Mile, a 1-mile out and back race that is completed before any of the other races start, giving you a chance to participate in more than one event. The half marathon starts at 8:45am, followed by the 5k and 10k races at 9am. The 5k and 10k courses follow flat out and back routes. Heading south from the start, racers pass under Hwy 14 and take a ramp up onto the packed gravel walking/biking path along the Columbia River to their respective turnarounds. On a clear day you’ll have a gorgeous view of Mount Hood to the East. The half marathon runners will spend some time on the streets of Washougal, before then joining the 10k course along the river.

After the race, stick around for awards, music, food and drink. Proceed from the event benefit Northwest Battle Buddies. “Empowering combat veterans with PTSD to regain their freedom and independence by partnering them with professionally trained and specifically matched service dogs at no charge — Serving our Veterans who served us all.”
