After starting with a series of smaller neighborhood races in Portland parks, Terrapin Events became a major player on the Portland race scene with two downtown events that nicely bookended the annual racing season: Cinco de Mayo in the spring and Run Like Hell in the fall. With similar courses and festive formulas, these two races quickly established themselves as fixtures on many local runners’ calendars. Sadly, as with most downtown Portland races recently, rapidly increasing permit fees have thrown a monkey wrench into these iconic Terrapin races, forcing the company to seek new locations and courses far from Naito Parkway and Waterfront Park.
But never fear, Cinco de Mayo will live on, moving to NE Portland and using courses familiar to participants of Foot Traffic’s Hop Hop Half. The half marathon and 10k will take runners from the start near Kliever Memorial Armory north to Marine Drive for a scenic out-and-back along the banks of the Columbia River, while 5k runners will head south for a dogleg out-and-back around the edges of the Riverside Golf Course.
Along with the relatively flat, less urban, and more scenic courses, the new version of the Cinco de Mayo races will feature Terrapin Events’ usual holiday atmosphere, with post-race beer, cider, snacks, and live music. With three distances to choose from and a kids’ race for the youngest runners, Cinco de Mayo is a great family event, and while no longer a downtown Portland staple, the 2019 version “May” be the start of a whole new tradition!
