Race Preview: 2019 ORRC Hagg Lake Road Runs & Trail Run

Did you run the Hagg Lake Mud Run in February? If you’re looking for a different experience at the lake (ie, less gushy messy mud,) come on out to the 2019 ORRC Hagg Lake Road Runs or the 2019 ORRC Hagg Lake Trail Run. This could be your redemption run or just another chance for a great race to tackle this Spring.

The Hagg Lake Road Runs will occur on May 4th and will offer you a choice between a 10.5 mile run along the road around Hagg Lake, a 10k, and a 5k option. You can also opt to walk the 10.5 mile event, which will start an hour before the running events. The 10.5 mile run will take you around the entire Hagg Lake loop and the 10k and 5k are both out and back courses. All distances start at Boat Ramp C and there will be four aid station for the 10.5 mile run and the 5k and 10k will go past the first two. You can check out the course map here.

The Hagg Trail Run is the next day on May 5th and it’s a 14 mile run that follows the same trail as the 25k Mud Run that was in February. There will be no surprises if you attended the mud run, but there will be much less slipping and sliding and more enjoyment of the lake and it’s surroundings. As with the previous day’s events, you’ll begin and finish at Boat Ramp C and you’ll travel the lake trail in a clockwise direction with a few breaks on some pavement. There is a four hour time limit for this race and it’s not a walking event. Taking walk breaks during your run is, of course, just fine but you must be able to manage an average pace of 17:10 per mile or better. There will be two aid stations out there where you can replenish yourself on PB&J, fruit, gummy bears, trail mix, pickles, and Gu. This is a cupless event, so please bring your own drinking vessels! Reusable cups will be for sale on race day for $5 if you need one. There will be plenty of portapotties at C Ramp and also one at each aid station. Check out the course here.

If you’re one of those amazing people who likes to torture yourself just a bit more than the average person and love some hard-earned dessert, you can do BOTH Saturday’s 10.5 mile road race and Sunday’s trail race around the lake and to earn a pie as a reward. Just be sure to register for this double event by April 28th to be guaranteed this yummy treat!

After the race on Sunday, stick around for hot dogs and burgers, plus some snacks, beer, and cider. There will be awards for the top runners as well as a raffle board. Check it to see if you’ve won anything after the race!

There’s a trail work day scheduled for Saturday, April 20th at 8:00AM. It’s a great way to give back to the trails that serve us so well in the Pacific NW. The trail will be cleared of low-hanging branches, vines, and trash so it will be race ready for all participants. It’s a great way to see the course before race day! Contact with any questions or to RSVP so the ORRC knows you are coming and can ensure there’s enough coffee and donuts for all!

The cost of the 10.5 mile road race and 10k is $45 and the 5k is $35. Sunday’s trail race is $65. The cost is $100 if you do the double (both Saturday’s 10.5 miler and Sunday’s 14 miler.) A Hagg Lake buff is included in your registration. Shirts are available for an additional $20 and you are only guaranteed one if you pre-register. The day of race fees will go up soon, so make sure you get registered before that happens!
