Race Series Preview: 2019 Healthy Kids Running Series

I was never an active kid, and when I became a runner at almost 30, I knew that I wanted to normalize running when I became a mom. My kids have watched me cross a few finish lines, and they love the medals I bring home when I “win” the race. I’ve never pushed them into running but my first grader participates in a running program at school and I think he just thinks it’s something everyone does. I love that.

Healthy Kids Running Series is a great non-profit program that gets kids moving in a healthy, community-based, supportive environment. This national program, founded in 2009 by a former collegiate runner, offers a five week running series for kids ranging in age from 2 to 14 years old. To help combat the alarming rates of childhood obesity while also boosting self esteem, the “Get Up and Go” attitude of the training is done in a fun way for kids all the way across the country.

There are three locations in Oregon to choose from: Beaverton, Klamath Falls, and Newberg. Additionally, there’s a program in Vancouver, WA. Pre-K kids 2 to 3 years old will be doing a 50 yard dash while 4 to 5 year olds will do a 75 yard dash. Kindergarten to 1st grade can participate in the ¼ mile distance, while 2nd grade to 3rd grade can enjoy the ½ mile distance. 4th grade thru 8th grade can do the 1 mile race.

The registration is $35 for all 5 weeks or $10 per race if you’re not sure you want to commit to the full series yet. The series registration includes a HKRS t-shirt, race bibs, a race bag, and a beautiful finisher’s medal that is earned after the 5th session of the series. The top point scores will earn a trophy. Those that register for a single race will only receive the bib number to wear for their race.

Be sure your kiddo has a water bottle, running shoes, and the appropriate clothing to race in. The series will go rain or shine, so be prepared for anything! Write your child’s first initial and last name on the tear-off portion of the race bib, as this is how the results are calculated. There will be a bag pick up option before race day, and please do allow yourself at least 30 minutes to pick up your goodies if you didn’t get a chance to go to bag pick up beforehand.

Let’s get our next generation out there and running so they can start bringing their own medals home!
