As the racing season begins each spring, there are a few notable races that one looks forward to. If you have ever run in Central Oregon, you have certainly heard of the Horse Butte 10 miler. An early season, low key, fun atmosphere race, that features some wicked fast times…with a catch. The catch is, in order for a course record to be counted, the runner must be wearing jean shorts. And yes, you read that right. So get out your denim and listen up, the Horse Butte 10 miler is a grand old party.
Put on by the local favorite Superfit Productions, featuring Super Dave, the race is nearly 100% singletrack, with the first 5 miles running slightly uphill, followed by a healthy amount of flat, fast trail. Depending on the weather, the course can be a muddy mess, a sandy affair, a snowy wonderland, or a well packed perfect setting. Because of the caliber of professional athletes who call Bend home, it is not uncommon to see several of them toe the line for this event. The current course record for the men is held by local pro runner, Max King. The current course record for the women is held by local pro runner, Allison Morgan.
Outside of staring at the competition, don’t forget to look up occasionally to see some of the most amazing views of the Cascades, including Bachelor, the 3 Sisters and other mountains that rise out of the landscape. Dave and crew put on a great race and work hard to make it a good time. The post run gathering is always a good time, filled with good food and good people. If you haven’t run this one yet, put it on your calendar.
