Race Preview: 2019 Shamrock Run (Portland)

Portland Shamrock Run

One of my favorite runs over the last five years has been the Shamrock 15k! Although, I’ve only run Shamrock five times, this will be their 41st year! It’s challenging, and fun! Each year I’ve run it, I’ve tried to run it faster, flying over those hills with as much ease as I can train my body to move. I always try to bring a friend, as running in Portland just seems so much better with a good friend! It’s definitely what I would call “challenging” with numerous hills to roll over. The “challenge” is what keeps me coming back!  I love it! I’m somehow drawn to the 15k, but Shamrock offers a half marahon, 8k, 5k, Stride walk (4-miles) and a kids Leprechaun run. The weather is always iffy. It’s typically raining and sometimes very windy but I feel as if that’s part of the Shamrock experience so I always just own it!

The race is downtown, so it’s a perfect opportunity to grab a bit to eat, before driving home if you’re from out of town. Shamrock offers hot shamrock Irish soup and a beer from Widmer Brothers Beer directly after the race, before looking for a big meal downtown! With registration you also receive an event t-shirt and for the half, a commemorative half medallion. Also, for the 15k a commermorative 15k medallion.

For the first year ever, all races will receive a finishers medal. This is the half marathon’s medal!

Plan on coming a day or two early for Shamrocks huge Fitness Fair. This years Fair is a two day event at Oregon Convention Center Exhibit Hall A/A1 (777 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Portland, OR 97232).  Join Shamrock and pick up your big either Friday, March 15th between 11a-7p or Saturday the 16th between 9a and 3p.

Some words from my coach, a runner who ran in the very first Shamrock races and won his age group: “I remember four things about Shamrock, big and well organized. The first real race of the racing season that let you know how your winter training went relative to others. The weather always being a shake of the dice. The guy who and Danny Boy before the start!”

About Julie Mullins (67 Articles)
I am a 41 year-old runner from Dallas, OR. I am married to Jerry (also a runner) and we have three kids (one who will run with us on occasion). I work full time at West Valley Hospital/Salem Health and run as often as I can. I ran in High school but as an adult, started running in 2008. Since then, I have completed 13 full marathons, numerous 5k, 10ks and 15k. I've run two Ultras and just completed my 31st half marathon. My goal is the get my BQ in 2018 at Eugene Marathon! (Pinch me, I DID IT!!!) I also organize a local running group called ZaoFit (on facebook). I LOVE running with others - it is what keeps me motivated to stay consistent, and to keep dreaming big.
