Trail Race Preview: 2019 Vortex Half Marathon and 10K (Estacada)

It’s time to start thinking about your first spring trail run of 2019. The Vortex Half Marathon and 10K Trail Run is March 23rd – just days after the start of spring.  Run Wild Adventures and Oregon Parks and Recreation Department are hosting this annual 70’s themed trail run, which is sure to challenge you with elevation changes and most likely lots of mud. The course is run on single track trails around Milo McIver Park in Estacada and boasts scenic views along the way. If you are a fan of disc golf, this park has a highly rated course, so you may want to bring your discs along for some post-race fun.

Both the 10K and the Half Marathon include some ups and downs, with the half marathon involving climbs totaling 1500 feet, and the 10K climbing about 600 feet total.

The Vortex Trail Run got its name from the first and only state sponsored rock festival – Vortex – held right in our own “backyard” in 1970. This week long festival was only a one-time event, but this trail run keeps a little piece of Vortex alive. 70’s attire is encouraged and prizes will be given, so dig out those funky tights, wigs, and tie-dye for this one of a kind race.

Vortex Trail Run has become a tradition for me and many of my running friends. The atmosphere is casual – with free sips of pre-race Fireball for those who dare – but the race is very organized and the trail is well-marked. The location is great with the trail running along the Clackamas River, through heavily forested areas, and along open meadows. There are age group awards, which in the past has been a super cool custom made wooden VW shaped medal. And, did I mention the possibility of some serious, shoe-sucking mud? This course has been known to include some of that – depending on how the weather has been before and on race day. Last year we actually encountered snow on our drive to the race location. It is the beginning of spring – you never know what you’ll see on race day. Regardless of weather, this event is one you should definitely put on your race list.
