Maybe it’s because I’m an Oregonian, but I’ve always found the Oregon coast to be magical in a way unlike anywhere else. As a runner, some of my most memorable runs have taken place on the coast, and I feel so lucky to have had those experiences. If you want your own memorable race, the 2019 Race to the Cape in Tillamook shouldn’t disappoint. After all, a place called Cape Lookout can’t be anything but gorgeous, right?
The Race to the Cape, hosted by Bivouac Racing, is on March 3rd this year, and there’s a half marathon and a 15k option for you. This is race #1 in the PNW State Park Trail Series and it should be a challenging one. March at the coast means mud on the trails and you stand a good chance of rain and lots of wind too. It’s moderately technical and is rated as a black diamond – advanced race.
Both races start at the day use area of Cape Lookout State park, and the 15k route will take runners up the North Trail to the Cape Trail, where you’ll continue before looping back. The Half Marathon will follow this same course but with a detour on the South Trail to the beach and back.
Bring $5 in cash or check for a parking pass and the cost of the race is $45 for the 15k and $55 for the Half Marathon. If you wait until the day of the race to register, the cost will increase $5.
Gorgeous beach and cliff top views will help make this race worth it’s weight in gold. This is a pretty small race, and a great opportunity to get out of town and enjoy the journey. Expect plenty of mud, some single and double track course with plenty of switchbacks to keep you moving, and lots of fun.
