2019 Races on our Radar #1: January 1 – And Sweepstakes #2 in the First Time Racer Series for the January PRC 5k

Welcome to the first post in the 2019 Races on our Radar series, where we report on cool and/or low-cost races, group runs, price and registration deadlines, and other things we think you should know about it.

We would like to you hear from you, too. If you’re in the know on a race that you think others need to check out, let us know via email, twitter, or facebook! We also want to know what you think of this series … do you read it? Is it helpful? What could be better?

First-Time Racer Sweepstakes: PRC Winter 5k #2

Are you new to running/walking and nervous about participating in a race? Here’s a great way to try it out at a fun, supportive race (the PRC Winter 5k) with a personal cheerleader! Sign up between now and noon on Sunday, January 6 for a chance to win an entry to this Saturday, January 12 race in Beaverton. Run Oregon’s Kelly Barten and/or Nikki Mueller will be with you every step of the way, at your pace. We firmly beleive that runners of all paces (including walk break pace!) deserve support and to run their own race, so if you have never raced, or maybe haven’t raced in a while, register for your chance to win online here!

Low-cost and Cool Races (and Group Runs)

SOR’s Frostbite Run 10k/5k is only $20 if you sign up online by midnight tomorrow (January 2). (And if you wait, it’s only $25.) You can also join Southern Oregon Runners as an individual for $15 and get discounts on their races all year – check out their full race schedule online here.

Bullard’s Beach Run is this Sunday, January 6 in Bandon, Ore. This is a donation-only race, which means there is no set registration cost and you donate what you can to register. The race also offers a t-shirt exchange, where participants are invited to bring a used-but-in-great-condition t-shirt to trade with other runners and walkers. There is a 5k, a 10k, and a kid’s mile, all starting at 2p.

The Perpetua FatAss will run on Saturday, January 12 in Yachats. This is a free event and is unsupported – so you’ll need your own hydration and nutrition. FatAss events are traditionally long-distance runs during cold-weather months, and many paces are represented. Also, like many FatAss runs, this is set up as a pot-luck if you can bring something to share for afterwards. Beer and pizza will also be provided. Routes will be provided for 10k, 20k, 30k, and 50k.

The next CORK Hot Chocolate Run is Sunday, January 13 in Bend. This is a free group run at 10a followed by some yummy hot chocolate, coffee, and treats. The run starts and ends at Loge Entrada, located at 19221 SW Century Drive in Bend. There is one more Hot Chocolate Run this year, on February 10.

On Monday, January 14, you can join the FootZone Sunriver Brewing Run, starting at 5:30p from their location at 842 Bond in Bend. Be sure to bring your ID and some $ for a pint! This is a free event but participants are asked to pre-register online here.

Wednesday, January 16 is the first Miles in Chiles indoor track race at the University of Portland. At this mini-meet, there will be a 400m, an 800m, and a mile, and each race is just $5 to run. Get more info here.

About Kelly Barten (1020 Articles)
I started the Run Oregon blog in February 2007, because I felt like running in Oregon and SW Washington deserved more positive coverage. I also wanted to level the playing field so that small, non-profit races could compete with big events; and to support LOCAL race organizers. I'm a Creighton Bluejay (undergrad) and an Oregon Duck (Sports Marketing MBA), and I live in Tigard with my husband and two kids. My "real job" is working for an incredibly awesome math textbook company doing marketing and production.
