Race Preview: 2019 New Years Hangover Run (Salem)

The turning of a new year means different things to different people. For some, it is a time of celebration and throwing caution to the wind, for others it means a new chance to meet goals. No matter which, the New Year’s Hangover Run in Salem has something for you.

The main race is a nice 3K distance, removing some PR pressure at this odd distance. The race kindly starts at 10:00AM so the previous eve’s events don’t have to be a deal breaker to you starting 2019 off on the right foot. To keep you on your toes, the course is Cross Country style, and incorporates gravel, grass and trail. Although the course is flat, it is safe to expect some mud to challenge you into the new year. And, if you are up for it (and 21 or older) there is an “aid” station with adult libations to help warm you up and power you through the 1.86 miles. There is no Race Day sign up for the 3K event and there are only 100 entries available.

For a totally different spin on the new year, try the Beer Mile. Not familiar with a beer mile? Participants combine running and drinking (more like chugging) to create a fun and fit filled race. At the start, runner drink a 12 oz. beer, then run a lap around the track. At the beginning of each lap, another beer will be consumed before runners can hit the rubber again. So, at the end of the mile, four beers and four laps will mix for a tasty track trot sure to get you spinning and smiling. The catch? Any runner who loses their beer to the track (vomit or otherwise) must complete a penalty lap at the end of the original mile. This event is $5 with Race Day sign up only and begins at 11:00 am.
