This weekend, I was running with a group of people who were discussing the merits of different race distances. One runner said she didn’t really find 5k’s worth her while after she started running half and full marathons, and I told her I understood her reasons why, (with no offense meant to all the awesome 5k runners and races.) But the exception to this rule, for me, was the PRC Winter 5k Series, which I’ve signed up for again this winter!
There are several reasons why running the 2018/19 PRC Winter 5k Series is worth your time, the first of which is that it’s a Run With Paula event. Anyone who’s ever run a race organized by Paula Harkin knows her events are the best in quality. Well organized, well thought out, fun, and plenty of goodies. The 5k series is certainly no exception to this rule. All of the races in the 5k series, three in all, have a great celebration afterwards in true Run With Paula fashion. After a morning jaunt from Portland Running Company in Beaverton out along the Fanno Creek Trail in Greenway Park, you can come back to a nice cozy store and have a delicious hot breakfast. There’s no reason to go home hungry! And then you can stick around for the raffle prizes.. There’s always a ton of chances to get some great running swag.
So what else makes the 5k series fun? The course is identical for all three races with the exception of one major detail for the third and final race in February .. no timing devices of ANY kind are permitted! That’s right, the 3rd race is a predictor race, which means you will take your best guess at your finish time before you run (and hey, you’ll have had the chance to practice for it in December and January, right?) Those closest to their predicted finish times will be the big winners of the day because it doesn’t matter how fast you are .. It only matters how accurate you are!! It’s really fun and I personally like the fun of guessing. It was a great way to test my inner clock last year (which BTW, was WAY off!!)
The cost for the event is $30 per race or $75 for all three. The shirt for the event is optional for another $20 and it’s a nice long-sleeved one. There’s one water station on the well-marked course with water and Gatorade. Please note that there are NO refunds even if the weather is bad. Remember it’s a winter series and the tagline is “Never Let Winter Win!!”
When: December 15th, January 12th, and February 9th. Each race begins at 9:00AM with doors opening at 7:30AM.
Where: Portland Running Company (10029 SW Nimbus Ave, Beaverton, OR 97008)
Cost: $30 for one 5k or $75 for all three. Race shirt is an additional $20.
