Race Preview: 2018 Operation Jack Northwest 6 Hr Run/Marathon & Half Marathon (Tigard)

The power of a parent’s love is never more evident than in events such as the Operation Jack Northwest Run. Sam Felsenfeld’s son Jack is autistic, and in 2010 Sam started running marathons to raise money for autism research and awareness. Sam ended up running 61 marathons and raising around $100,000 for the organization Train 4 Autism. The final race was on December 26 in Southern California, and many  Pacific NW friends wanted to show their support by organizing an event on the same day. The race here was a 6.1 hour run (to honor the 61 marathons) and it’s now in it’s 6th year and on December 8th. You can read more about Operation Jack here.

There are two options if you sign up for the 2018 Operation Jack Northwest Run. You can sign up for the 6 Hour Run/Marathon (in which you can run as few or as many of those 6 hours as you’d like to,) or you can sign up for the Half Marathon, which is 14 loops around Summerlake Park.

If you opt to sign up for the 6 Hour Run/Marathon, you will be asked to choose a distance option (for example, the “short distance” is 1-13 loops, or 1-13 miles.) However, you don’t have to run the distance you’ve selected.. it’s really just to help you gage how long your run will be. If you do want to run a full marathon (which would be 28 laps around the park,) and think you’ll need more than 6 hours, that can be arranged if you contact the race organizers ahead of time.

This race will not be on a closed course, so please be mindful of other runners and walkers. If you’d like to see the course, which is a 0.9375 mile loop around Summerlake Park, you can view it here. There will be a fully stocked aid station at the start/finish area with water and Gatorade as well as chips, cookies, fruit, etc. There will be plastic cups available but everyone will be limited to 1 cup only (your name will be written on it,) in an effort to cut back on waste. Consider bringing your own drinking vessel to help out even more.

The cost for this race is $60 for the 6 Hour Run/Marathon or $50 for the Half Marathon and you’ll get a tech shirt if you register for the race by November 17th. If you register after this date, there is no shirt included in the cost, and the price goes down $10 for each race distance. This is a fundraising event, so consider donating some extra money when you register.

All runners will get a finisher’s medal and this event will be chip timed. There will be awards for top male and female for most miles in 6 hours, and also winners for the half marathon as well.

The race is capped at only 100 runners, so get on it now!
