Oregon Road Runners Club (ORRC) is one of the oldest, largest local running clubs that puts on organized events throughout the year, which generally welcome both runners and walkers of all paces. I’ve participated in several of their races this year and always appreciate the little touches they add, like a raffle for homemade pies after the Vernonia Half Marathon or a well-stocked bagel bar at the Up the Lazy River 10K.
And they love using routes throughout the area to get us out of our routines. It can be easy to forget all of the amazing places to run in the Portland Metro area. With so many races using familiar Naito or Springwater trails, we can forget the pockets of wilderness that are right around the city. The Best Dam Run is a point-to-point 10K event that gives you that chance to explore a rustic corner of the greater Portland metro area—and maybe view some wildlife along the way.
After a short bus ride to the start, runners and walkers will journey alongside the Clackamas River into downtown Estacada. It’s a pleasant, mostly downhill course, on a quiet road above the river and through the woods on a private road closed to traffic for the first 4.5 miles. Some sections of the course are shaded, and some are more open and sunny. The final part of the course rejoins the US 214 highway, where you’ll run or walk within a coned-off area including the bike lane, before you return to the town. The finish line is wonderfully placed near a farmers market so you can wander over after you enjoy your post-race food and drink. You’ll definitely want to stick around for raffle prizes and musical entertainment.
All finishers receive a high-quality long-sleeve T-shirt (women’s S-XXL or unisex XS-XXXL) and a finisher’s medal.
