Race Preview: 2018 Oktoberfest Run (Mount Angel)

Every year I look forward to the Oktoberfest Run in Mount Angel for several reasons: First off, to me it marks the beginning of the “fall running season” with crisp mornings and no real danger of uncomfortable heat. Secondly, the course is very pretty, and I can choose 5k or 10k, depending on my motivation level. And third, as a native German I am appreciating the authenticity (sort of) of the Mount Angel Oktoberfest where I can find food an goodies that I otherwise have a hard time finding.

The race takes place on Saturday, September 15th, with a half marathon starting at 8am and the 5k and 10k following at 9am. All distances start and end at Humpert Park on the east side of Mount Angel. The 5k is an out and back course along farmland with a small loop through the neighborhood at the end. The 10k starts the same as the 5k, but instead of turning around it runs a big loop around the St Benedict abbey, then finishes on the same neighborhood loop. The half marathon course first takes a loop to the north of the town, then around the mile 6 mark joins the 10k course and (for the most part) follows the 10k course around the abbey to the finish.

Participants can expect a well organized race, chip timing, and fun German/Bavarian/beer/Wurst themed costumes. If you spend the day, the Oktoberfest is a lot of fun, and not just in the Biergarten but also at the street fair offering foods, crafts, and kids’ activities.
