Race Preview: 2018 Boring Marathon, Half-Marathon, Relay, and 8K (Boring)

The Boring Half Marathon is easily in my top five race experiences ever. I’ve participated four years in a row and am already signed up for the 5th annual event.

For me, the great joy of this event is not the course (though it’s a very nice out and back on Springwater Trail). It’s all about the leadership behind the event. Even if you are not interested in registering, do yourself a favor and still check out the website and Facebook page fo: The Boring Marathon, Half-Boring Half-Marathon, Really Boring Relay and Constantly Boring 8K Race Series.

Here’s a taste:

“Question: How do you know if someone ran a marathon? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you all about it! So, this is your chance to own a piece of history. And no, we don’t sell goats (but you can come to our races and pet them…even go for a run with them. How cool is that!)”

And this:

“Time limit – We don’t limit the finishing time and walkers are certainly welcome. However, because we run part of the races along public roads, aid stations and volunteers at intersections are stopped after 6 hours. We will stay at the finish line until all runners come in and nobody will be disqualified due to time.”

The race organizers are funny, kind, and dedicated to their community. All proceeds from the event go to Sam Barlow High School Track and Cross-Country Teams and the West Orient Middle School Track team. Scholarships are set up so that some of the student athletes can participate in future training camps. And for the runners and walked in one of the events, we are supported so well with bagels, goats, a medal, and a swag bag complete with tech shirt, pint glass, and bib with the picture of a baby goat. All the effort of these organizers has resulted in a marathon course that is now a Boston qualifier.

Check out the website. Then check out the race. And then check out the goats.
