Inaugural Race Preview: Roses on the River 5k (Portland)

Based on the description of this inaugural 5K event, this could become one of my new go-to recommendations for new runners.

Terrapin Events is adding a new event to their calendar with Roses on the River taking place this September. The Saturday morning run will primarily utilize the Esplanade Loop in downtown Portland, which seasoned PDX runners know is a super popular place to run or walk throughout the year. Race planners are planning ahead for a big event; they will be starting at 8:30am with two waves of walkers, followed by the elite runners, and then six waves of runners. All waves will be based on participants anticipated per mile pace when they register. I’ve completed a race on the Esplanade before so this is a great plan to help with bottlenecking.

Along with being a “classic Portland” running area, this event has some bonuses for participants that are perfect reflections of Rose City. Participants who register before August 23rd will receive a commemorative scarf. All participants will also receive a ticket to the Friday, September 7th Portland Thorns versus Seattle Reign game. Members of the Thorns will be present at the race, then you get to go watch them run around in circles.

After your 5K, enjoy a beer or cider from Widmer Brothers / 2Towns, free snacks, fun music, and a commemorative rose (maybe to gift to someone who slept through this fun morning).
