This is your reminder that the SW5k (also called the SW Bible 5k because the start/finish is at SW Bible Church in Beaverton) is the evening of Sunday, July 8. This is an evening race, and all participants and volunteers get treated to a burger or dog and chips after the race. But don’t wait too long … online registration closes on July 5.
This 5k had 357 finishers in 2017, making it large enough to field highly competitive runners as well as offering a supportive course for walkers. There is a water station near the halfway mark, near the top of a hill, where you’ll be glad for a little respite.
The 5k starts at 5p, and registration is still only $10. There’s also a family-friendly (read: take your time with the little ones) at 6p that is free.
Our dear friend Jeff Huber of Huber Timing will be tracking everyone’s finish time, and Beaverton Police will be providing course support at the road crossings. Volunteers will be spaced along the course to keep you from getting lost, but mainly to give you support because this is not an easy 5k. The route takes you up a number of hills, including a few stretches on the Powerline Trail, Teal Boulevard, and SW 155th. Just remember – everyone in the race has to take on those same hills!
The SW5k is just one in a series of free community events hosted by SW Bible Church. When you go to the registration page, you’ll see a series of colored icons down the side of the page, and you can click on any of them to get more info on their events including a Food Carts night, Carnival, and the Car Show. These are really fun and family-friendly events and they do not work any religious references into them. After the events, they do host an outdoor service, and everyone is invited to attend, but by no means is anyone expected to. (I have a few friends that go to that church and they have said they love it, though!)
Another reason I love this race is because it’s very supportive. High school and youth groups provide on-course support, and people are more inclined to stick around and cheer for others because it’s an evening race and folks hang out afterwards.
I personally am volunteering, and my husband will race. I’ll probably try the mile race with my 6-year-old daughter. I hope to see you there! Here are the details:
