Race Preview: 2018 Ochoco Trail Runs (Prineville)

Do you ever come across a race and want to drop everything you’re doing that weekend to run it? This is how I feel about the Ochoco Trail Run in Central Oregon. With dreamy singletrack, beautiful vistas, and all my favorite distances, it’d be hard to go wrong with the event.

Hosted by Crux Ridge Running, Saturday, July 7th is the day for a 50M, 50K, or 10.5 mile run in the Ochoco National Forest.

The Ochoco Trail Runs offer spectacular views of the Cascade Range. The trail winds through mixed conifer forest, old growth ponderosa pine, and many open meadows. During the Spring and Summer months there is an abundance of wildflowers in the meadows along the course. Wildlife include wild horses, elk, deer, and coyotes. All of the races start and finish at the Walton Sno park.

The 50M boasts ~9,000 feet of elevation gain/loss, the 50K has ~6,300 feet, and the 10.5 miler is an out-and back with ~1,900 feet. Unfortunately due to permit restrictions, no pacers or dogs are allowed on the course.

Just as many other trail races these days, this race will be cupless, so plan accordingly. You can view course maps / descriptions / aid station info on the race website to help prepare.  Post-race food & beer will be provided by Ochoco Brewing and will be free to racers and volunteers, and friends and family can enjoy for a small fee.

Anyone is welcome to camp for free at the start/finish line (Walton Sno Park) and additional camping is available at Walton Lake campground for a fee. The nearest non-camping options are in Prineville, about a 45 minute drive. A discounted room rate is available at the Best Western Prineville Inn by calling 541-447-8080. Let them know you are with Ochoco Trail runs to receive the discounted rate.

The 50 Mile and 50K are both UTMB qualifying races. The 50 Mile is worth 4 points and the 50K is worth 3 points.

The beneficiaries of the Ochoco Trail Runs are Redmond High School and Crook County High School.

This race is definitely on my radar for 2019 – lots of luck to everyone out there this year!
