I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been running and thinking about a post-race treat to help motivate me to get to the finish line. It’s kind of embarrassing how much I love rewarding all my hard work with something delicious later. A race like the 2018 Salem Summer Solstice 5k/10k is made for people like me, because every race entry includes a post-race ice cream sundae. Sign me up!!
This will be a fun evening summer event hosted by the Willamette Valley Road Runners in Salem, and it’s got an “ice cream social” sort of feel to it. Both the 5k and 10k course are flat, and both follow scenic trails along the Willamette River. You can view the course maps here. Flat AND pretty, plus ice cream? Yes please!!
The 10k will start at Minto Brown Park at 7:00PM, followed by the 5k at 7:10PM. No roller blades, skates, skateboards, or dogs are allowed, but baby joggers and strollers are welcome. Walkers are encouraged to join in the fun for the 5k, though race timing and course monitoring will end at 8:30AM.
The cost for this race is a steal for only $12 (or $8 for Willamette Valley Road Runner members) until June 4th, after which the cost will increase to $15 for everyone. Day of race registration will be $20. Pre-registration ends 6/21.
After the race, enjoy your ice cream (guest sundaes available for $2 each if you want to bring your cheering squad) and the awards. Ribbons will go to age group winners 3 deep and medals will go to overall and master winners for each gender for both distances.
This race is limited to 400 registrants and benefits the McKay High School Cross Country Team, so come on out to show your support and sign up now for some fun!
