Race Preview: 2018 Mary’s Peak 50 Mile/50k/25k Trail Run (Blodgett, OR)

Have you ever heard of Mary’s Peak in Blodgett, OR? Honestly, neither had I, but those that have been there have told me it’s beautiful. And it should be a memorable day on June 16th when the 2018 Mary’s Peak 50 Mile/50k/25k Trail Run takes place. This will be my very first ultra marathon and I am so looking forward to the adventure.

Mary’s Peak, part of Siuslaw National Forest, is only about 20 minutes from Corvallis and this race features some of the most idyllic, picturesque trails you’ll see in the Pacific NW. Not only will you have the beauty of Mary’s Peak, but you’ll also get to trek around the private forest and trails of Starker Forest. Much of the course is on private land, so special thanks should go to the Starker Forests and USFS and Siuslaw National Forest for allowing runners to experience this terrain. Any course with the word “peak” in it is bound to be challenging, and Mary’s Peak is the highest point in the Oregon Coast Range. But how can you enjoy the views if not for the climb? If you choose to take on the 50 Miler, you’ll get to summit the peak twice!!

The 25k and the 50k will offer bus rides from the Blodgett School to the starting line at the base of the peak, as this is a point to point course. Your warm-up gear will be taken back to the school if you’d like to bring some. Busses will leave just after 7:00AM for the 50k and 8:00AM for the 25k, so please don’t be late for the 15 mile ride to the start! The 50 Miler will start from Blodgett at 6:30AM and will not include a bus ride, as this route will offer a double ascent on Mary’s Peak. The Blodgett School gym will be open after 5:30AM on race day for packet pick-up and check-in for the 50 Miler. Other distances should plan to check in 15-30 minutes prior to bus departure.

This will be a well supported race with aid about every 10k and the course will be well marked with signage and volunteers out there to keep you from getting lost. There will be electrolyte drink and pills, gels, chips, rice crispy treats, trail mix, PB & J sandwiches and more waiting for you at the aid stations, as well as medical supplies and first aid.

This is a challenging race, with a lot of climbing, but pace yourself and enjoy the adventure! If anyone needs a ride back at any point during the race, they will be made available. Everyone will also be given a cell phone number to contact the race director as needed.

Drop bags will be allowed for 50 mile and 50k participants. This would be a 1-gallon clear ziplock or drawstring bag or a very small cooler labeled with your name and bib number. They will be dropped in the morning and available at for aid 1/3 for the 50k and aid 1/3/5 for the 50 Miler. Your gear will be available at the school by about 3:00PM. Please label your gear and bring on the bus ride to the drop point. Shoes and larger items should be labeled and in a draw string bag.

With the registration for this race, you’ll receive a tech t-shirt, a pint glass, and a swag bag. You’ll also get a post event meal and beverage and you’ll be hungry!!

There will be a special finisher award for 50 Miler participants as well as custom awards for the top 3 in each category of each distance.

Make this a family affair and get a campsite at Fir Ridge Campground, which is only 5 minutes away. There are also hotels located in nearby Corvallis. There are only 125 spots for each distances except the 50 miler which has 100 spots available. Register now so you can get your spot (and your t-shirt which is only guaranteed until 6/1.) I hope to see you out there on race day!!
