Race Preview: Inaugural Spence Mountain 50K & 30K (Klamath Falls)

In my running life, I have 3 true loves: single track trails, ultramarathons, and small inaugural events (and the rain, too, but that’s in my regular life, as well). The 2018 Spence Mountain Run, hosted by the Linkville Lopers, is all three of those things, in beautiful southern Oregon. This race looks spectacular and I’m jealous of every single runner who’ll be there this year!

This run will be held at the Shoalwater Bay Trailhead, which is about 20 miles north of Klamath Falls, and will climb to the summit of Spence Mountain twice. Both courses will be primarily on single track, with technical sections of roots, rocks, drops, etc. and start with a 2.5 mile climb of ~1,200 feet! Later, once you’ve recovered, another climb of ~1,500 feet over 5.5 miles will bring you back to the summit. Both events run the first 30K on the same course, then the 50K runners will carry on for an additional 13 miles. Aid stations will be located every 5-7 miles on the course and there will be volunteers at critical trail junctions.

The 30K has about 3,200 feet of total elevation and the 50K easily has over 4,000 feet. Early start will be allowed 1 hour before each event if runners anticipate being over 5 hours for the 30K or 7 hours for the 50K. Cut off time will be 3pm for both events at the finish line.

Weather in the area in early June is typically 30 to 40 degrees overnight and 50 to 80 degrees during the day. The courses run through stretches of thick forest / brush, which should provide some shelter.

Awards will be presented at 2pm for the overall male and female winners of the event, as well as age group winners (first place male and female in each category 10-19; 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60+).

Packet pickup will be at Asana Yoga & Sole in Klamath Falls from 1pm-6pm Friday afternoon or starting at 7am at the start line on race day. Registration is allowed at packet pickup until 6pm. Unfortunately no race day sign ups will be allowed.

A training run on the 30K course will be held in late April or early May if you want to get a sneak peek at the course beforehand!
