Race Preview: 2018 Bend Beer Chase Relay

Every year, I have more and more friends telling me how much they love the Bend Beer Chase. I’ve done a lot of relays and drank a lot of beer, but this is one I’ve never tried and it’s on my list of relays to do before I die or my legs break. This year, it will be on June 2nd 2018 and it’s guaranteed to be a fun event you won’t want to miss.

So what makes this race great? Well, first off, it’s in Central Oregon, which is a beautiful place to run and a fun place to stay. And there’s the relay aspect of it, which is always a blast when you get a fun group of people together. And then, of course, there’s the beer, which is kind of a big thing in Bend, and lots of it from some pretty amazing craft breweries.

The Bend Beer Chase is a 12-leg relay that is approximately 50 miles total and takes place over 1 day with up to 6 friends. The course will take your team from Bend to Redmond and then to Sisters before heading back to Bend again. The relay starts at Worthy Brewing and finishes downtown at Crow’s Feet Commons. Each time your team exchanges at brewery, you will have the opportunity to sip a 3-4 oz sample of beer. Each team must have a designated driver until the van is parked for the final race leg.

After the relay is completed, there’s a 3 mile “Keg Leg” in which runners park the van and follow a course with 7 brewery stops before heading back to Crow’s Feet Commons for the Finish Line Brew Fest, where a free concert for all to enjoy will be waiting at the end. Individuals can also opt to do just the Keg Leg if they don’t wish to also do the relay.

This race is a self-supporting race, so team members are responsible for carrying their own food and water, as there will not be aid stations in most areas of the course (other than those noted in the race guide.)

Each Keg Leg runner will receive a raffle ticket at each brewery visited. The breweries the farthest away (Crux, Atlas, and Silver Moon) will even give people 2 raffle tickets for their journey. When you get to the brewfest at the end of the race, there will be awesome raffle prizes. Also at the brewfest, there will be cornhole, bobbling for applies, a Ferris Wheel, and live music. This will be a big party!!

This race is capped and the event will sell out, so register today and experience all the beer and running that Central Oregon has to offer you! It will be a race not soon forgotten.
