Race Preview: 2018 Smith Rock Ascent 50K, 15 mile and 4 Mile

One of the biggest perk to running is exploring gorgeous areas and one perk to running up steep hills is the incredible views at the top. The Smith Rock Ascent 50K, 15 mile and 4 mile race offers all these things, climbing, stunning views, and scenery you won’t find anywhere else.

Each of the races promises to take you high in the gorgeous trials along the rock faces. From the trails you can see breathtaking mountain views and grasslands as far the eye can see. Hopefully the beauty of it all will take your mind off your burning legs as you climb through this state park.

Currently the 50K and the 15 mile run is sold out but the 4 mile and kids race are still open and you can jump on the waitlist for the 50K and 15 miler if you are interested in those distances. That’s right, there is a kid’s race as well, and don’t worry, they won’t be scaling the trails. The kid’s race is about a half mile long and each kid receives a medal. It is sure to be a cute way to start off the day.

50K runners are required to be shuttle to the start and finish of the race. Also, finish line drop bags are allowed for the 50K so that runners can change into fresh shoes and clothes when they are done running and before the post-run festivities. The 50K course is a lollipop shape and has around a 4,100 ft elevation gain and the majority of the course is on a single lane trail. The 15 Miler ascends Gray Butte with panoramic views at the top. There is a 3,000 foot elevation gain to get to this view! After you reach the top, it is a nice descent all the way back. The 4 mile also promises to have quite the climb and views for those that don’t want to go as far as the other distances.

There will be aid stations along the course with salfty and sweet treats galore, including PB&J’s, chips, pretzels, gu’s, etc. This race is cupless and all runners are required to carry drinking devices.

Stay after the race for burritos from Longboard Louie’s and to discuss the race with your fellow runners. The top three finishers will receive prizes from sponsors and awards. Top three finishers in each gender and age category will also receive awards. There will also be raffles prizes.
