Race Preview: 2018 Oregon Dunes Triathlon & Duathlon (Dunes City)

Hosted by Best in the West, the 2018 Oregon Dunes Triathlon & Duathlon is on Saturday May 12th, 2018. This is the first open water triathlon of the season in Oregon. The clean, clear, shallow waters of Woahink Lake warm up quickly and make for a great, early season, open water swim. Woahink Lake is one of the cleanest lakes around. It is the main drinking water supply for Dunes City. In addition to being the first open water triathlon, it is also the first USAT sanctioned event of the season and the only Olympic distance triathlon on the Oregon Coast.

I raced last year and it is one I will definitely add to my 2018 season. Add the Oregon Dunes Triathlon and Duathlon to your race calendar. This race is challenging, beautiful, memorable and so much fun. Here is some excerpts from my experience:

We were met with the most beautiful finisher’s medals and back at the expo area there were delicious warm soups provided in generous portions by Homegrown Public House. They offered clam chowder and vegan and gluten-free mulligatawny soup. I tasted both and they were delicious! They also offered oranges, bananas and a selection of fresh breads. The awards were made by race director Staci, from beautiful and unique pieces of driftwood. They are a beautiful memento from a very fun and memorable event.

I love triathlons, each one is a unique and memorable experience and an opportunity to bond with, encourage, support and be inspired by other athletes.

The bike course features a challenging ride with rolling hills and a few climbs. The scenic ride travels along quiet, low traffic roads surrounding the lake and outskirts of Dunes City. The run is one of the more exciting courses in the area, with trails, road and even some sand, you won’t get bored on this course. Racers can enjoy the views as they twist and turn through beautiful Honeyman State Park. This memorable race concludes with a finish line dash up the dunes overlooking Cleawox lake.
