Race Preview: 2018 Angry Owl Ultramarathons (Salem) – DISCOUNT CODE

We may be a little bit ahead of the game on this one, but if you are planning on running an ultra marathon, you are likely going to have to put some training in. July 2018 brings one of my personal favorites to Salem, Angry Owl Ultra Marathon a Crusty Cap Event. Angry Owl is held at Bush Pasture Park. Last year I ran Angry Owl for the inaugural event. I knew as I finished the 6 hr race with goals meet, I would be back in 2018. Race director Josh and his team do a great job organizing this event. They have made a few small changes this year, making it even better. For 2018 there will be a 24 hours race added. The start/finish line has also been moved from the derby track over to the southeast end of the park by the softball field, giving runners closer access to their cars.  This Ultra is really a friendly course to both first timers wanting an Ultra under their belt, or long time Ultra runners.

The course is just over a mile loop and flat. The loop consist of hard packed dirt, well-maintained non-technical trail, packed gravel, and a little asphalt. You will go onto the derby track and past the stadium.  You will then run into a wooded area and around the to softball field. The course will be a well marked. The start and finish will be at the end of the park by the softball field. 1050 Leffelle St. SE Salem OR will bring you to the starting line.

When: Saturday and Sunday July 28th-29th 2018

  • 24 hour: starts at noon Saturday and ends at noon Sunday
  • 12 hour: pick from two start times. Noon on Saturday or midnight on Sunday.

There will be an aid station near the start/finish area with water, Tailwind Nutrition Endurance Fuel, Gu, fruit, salty and sweet snacks, and a few other goodies. You may leave your own foods near the finish line for easy access as you’re running.

Why “ANGRY OWL?” There are Owls that live at Bush Pasture Park and they have gained a whole lot of attention!  A few runners have been “attacked” by the Owls flying down and stealing their hats as they run by! Don’t worry, no runners were seriously hurt in these attacks.  Each runner will receive an Angry Owl Cap when they check in.  You might want to hide your cap from the Owls while your run!
