Spring is just around the corner, and I look forward to sunny and warmer races. A great location for early spring racing is Champoeg State Park just south of the Portland Metro, where the ORRC Champoeg Races take place on Saturday, March 3rd. There are three distances offered again this year: the 10k, half marathon, and 30k. All races start and end near the pavilion in the Riverside Day Use area at the western end of the park.
The race starts on packed barkchip trails and runs mostly on park roads and paved park paths. The 10k course is a single loop, the 30k course runs the 10k course three times. The half marathon is mostly a double loop of the 10k, but the turnaround point is pushed out a little bit to make up for the difference in distance to get the half marathon to the full 21.0975k (13.1M). The 10k is the second event of the annual ORRC 10K Series. Due to the nature of the trails, dogs and strollers are not permitted on this course, and headphones are strongly discouraged.
I have run several races at Champoeg, and they are so nice! There is plenty of parking right near the start, a small brick&mortar bathroom by the parking lot in addition to porta potties by the start line, shade from the sun, closed course, paved course, and rolling hills without anything too crazy.
All finishers receive a high tech event shirt, a finishers medal, and awards are given for overall winners and six deep in age groups. Every runner’s name is also entered into a raffle prize drawing. The aid station at 1.5 miles and 4.75 miles offers water, fruit, and other goodies. After the race, there are three soups to choose from, grilled cheese sandwiches from Franz, water and soda.
