Make a Day of It: An Historic Evening with Anne Frank’s Stepsister in Portland on February 20th

Run Oregon loves running – that’s no surprise. But we also love the Pacific Northwest and all that it has to offer. Running is a part of us, but it does not fully define us. In our new “Make a Day of It” feature, we aim to showcase some great local non-running events and highlight where to run and how to make the most of your experience!

The next installment of this series is the An Historic Evening with Anne Frank’s Stepsister in Portland.

“Running is the greatest metaphor for life because you get out of it what you put into it”

– Oprah

Oprah has been in the news a lot over her life, so you may have heard this quote before, but remains very true in my eyes. I have my own quote, which is very similar, “Life is like running – it has lots of ups and downs”. Essentially, you go though the running highs and good feelings, and also experience struggles and pain along the way. You push yourself to your limits and discover yourself in the process. It’s a nice metaphor. Though it all, you have a great feeling of accomplishment when you are finished – just like life.

I believe that Run Oregon, and everyone who writes for it, shares the same general feelings that I do. My goal and dream in life is to inspire others to get outdoors and be active. Run Oregon and I have these goals in mind when writing about all the great races here in Oregon, and also when we venture a little off the running path for content, such as our “Make a Day of It” feature.  My goal as a Jewish man is also to educate any and all whom I come in contact with about my heritage, as well as about Jewish history and it’s people.

Running is as much as a part of me as it is being a Jew, so that’s why An Historic Evening with Anne Frank’s Stepsister is very important to me. I specifically want to experience this event for myself, and I encourage you, Jew or not, to consider experiencing it for yourself. I also desire to give a response of the event from a Jewish perspective.

This event, hosted by Chabad Center for Jewish Life, is the first of a 2-stop event series (February 20 in Portland and February 22 in Salem) for Eva Schloss, a childhood friend and stepsister of Anne Frank.

At the age of eight, Eva became friends with Anne, playing hopscotch and drinking lemonade together. Her sensational story is difficult to imagine, yet it reminds us that life is precious and fragile, that the power of good is immeasurable, and that love make a difference.

Being a Jew, I anticipate this will affect me personally, yet I believe this event with this sort of content should touch you all as well. With everything going on in our world recently, I think it’s necessary to share this event in an effort to learn and hear about the stories and experiences.

If you need a suggestion of where to run before the event, the Newmark Theater is located right in the heart of downtown Portland. It’s simple and easy to head down to the Waterfront and put in any number of miles. However, a personal favorite of mine is the Macleay to Pittock loop. Lower Macleay Park and trail is located in Northwest Portland. It’s only about 3 miles from trail to theater, but considering evening traffic in Portland, you may be better off finding parking at either location and then Ubering to the other. Or just run the distance if you have the time.

You can continue left to going all the way up to what is hands down the greatest view in Portland – the view from the Pittock Mansion. An up-and-down from the trailhead will round things off at about 6 miles. If you are looking to refuel before the show, definitely eat at the delicious Jewish delicatessen, which is about halfway between the trail and the theater.

Regardless of if you incorporate running into your day, I recommend spending the very reasonable $25 to take in this unique and powerful experience.
