Kegs & Legs Beer of the Week: Motorhead barley wine and Cocoa Cow milk stout by Sunriver Brewing Company (SEASONAL ONLY)

Untitled

I love beer. After now having visited over 345 different breweries, it’s fair to say I have sampled a lot of beer (follow me on Untappd). From post-race pints and run club meeting locations, to beer miles and relays, running and the kegged nectar seem to go hand-in-hand in Oregon. Our Kegs and Legs feature is where beer drinking runners like me can go to find some new favorite beverages.

Sunriver is great isn’t it? I think it’s a combination of the quietness, isolation, the views and even the smell just ooze fun and relaxation. We try to get over there once every few years (primarily to run the Sunriver Half) and take in all that it has to offer. Despite its small size, there is plenty to do – hit the trails by foot or bike, play golf, swim / tan at the waterparks, and take in some local faire. For me, a necessary stop during our trip is always stopping in at Sunriver Brewing Company in the main shopping area. I have always appreciated their beers and their new-ish expansion into Bend showcases that I’m not the only one that feels that way. Sunriver Brewing recently sent us a couple of their limited seasonal options to check out: Motorhead Black Barley Wine and Cocoa Cow Chocolate Milk Stout.

Motorhead clocks in at over 10% and it’s definitely one that packs a punch. I found it relatively hoppy and less boozy than I anticipated. It pours dark with a nice head and is meant to be savored. It’s definitely a solid one for slowly drinking on cool winter evenings until you pass out from the exhaustion of the holidays and the warmth from a good strong beer.

The Cocoa Cow has won numerous awards in the past few years, both local, state, and national honors, and it’s easy to see why. This milk stout has some chocolately-goodness going on, specifically with the addition of roasted Ghana cocoa nibs. Right when you pop off the cap, you are hit with a delicious chocolate scent. It pours a deep dark hue and the head rises wonderfully in a snifter. It’s like dessert in a glass, and at 6%, it’s not going to melt you completely away.

Both come in 16.9 ounce bottles that are perfect sizes for these beers. Make sure you grab a couple this winter!
