Strava Segment of the Week: Terwilliger Bike Path: Iron Mtn to Tryon Entrance

Even if you’re not trying to claim a course record, these Strava Segments are fun to incorporate into your training. If you’re on Strava, you know how fun it is to see any segments you covered on a run and see how you stack up, and to compare your performance from run to run.

This week’s Strava Segment of the week includes a nice hilly stretch on the paved path that runs roughly parallel to Terwilliger Blvd, starting just north of SW Mary Failing Drive and climbing up to the main entrance to the park. This is a popular segment, with 1,671 attempts by 529 different people. It’s 0.6 miles and while it only gains 18 feet, you’ll definitely notice the hill. Be sure to look at the map for Terwilliger Bike Path: Iron Mtn to Tryon Entrance here.

Our segment from two weeks ago was the High Rocks Bridge Sprint. This segment, in Gladstone, had been attempted 1,095 times by 226 people, but today it shows 1,113 attempts by 229 people, so good job on the three of you that went and tried it out! Angela Lindbo and Dain Cason still hold the course records.

Have you joined the Run Oregon Strava Club yet? It’s totally free (as is Strava, although they do offer a paid version as well). We currently have 102 members. Last week, the leader in both distance (at 57.8 miles) and time (with 9:58:33) was Darin Swanson, and G RunzMtnz led the climbing, with 4,629 feet. I also want to give a shout out to Patricia Liu, who is a Run Oregon Strava Club member, and loved 18 miles over 6 runs last week. Nice work!

As of November 2, 2017, the course records for the segment Terwilliger Bike Path: Iron Mtn to Tryon Entrance are:

Women’s: Nicole Andergard from May 2016, 3:39

Men’s: Nick Schuetze from October 2015, 3:40

So, can you beat their times and become the leader of this segment? You have until Friday, January 12 at noon to try and break the record and see your name in “lights” on Run Oregon! We’ll post a new Segment next Friday at 12.

Strava is an online training and racing log for runners and cyclists. The basic account is free and requires you to create a login. There is also a premium version, but in order to run and record routes as described in this post, you do not need to subscribe to their premium service. Note that this is not sponsored by Strava, nor endorsed or supported in any way by Strava. It’s just a fun thing we’re going to do to give some speedy shout-outs to area runners and pose a challenge to those of you willing to take on their segment.

We started the Run Oregon blog in February 2007, because felt like running in Oregon and SW Washington deserved more positive coverage. We also wanted to level the playing field so that small, non-profit races could compete with big events; and to support local race organizers.
