Race Preview: 2018 Resolution Run & Polar Bear Plunge 5k/10k/Half Marathon/Kids Run (Newport)

How do you feel about taking a dip in the Pacific Ocean in January? Whether that sounds like a fun challenge or pure torture, you’ll get to decide for yourself on Saturday January 6th at the 6th annual Resolution Run & Polar Bear Plunge in Newport.

This race, hosted by Ardor Adventures, has a 5k, a 10k, a half marathon, and a kids run, so there are plenty of options for the whole family. A portion of the race proceeds will benefit the local Newport High School Cross Country Team, so your money is going to a worthy cause. The best part? After you cross the finish line, you’ll be presented with the choice of celebrating your victory with a plunge into the Pacific Ocean or opting for dry land.

The 5k course is flat with less than 50 ft of total elevation gain. You’ll start at the end of South Jetty Road and run along Yaquina Bay and under the bridge and past Rogue Brewery. The last ¼ mile is a mix of gravel and sand. The 10k course is also flat with less than 110 ft of total elevation gain. This distance starts in the same place as the 5k, but at the 1.75 mile marker, the 10k turns left and past the Oregon Coast Aquarium before proceeding along the Yaquina Bay. The race joins up with the 5k route again at approx. 4.91 miles. Again, the last ¼ mile is a gravel and sand mix. The half marathon is about 6.75 miles of pavement, very flat and fast. The remaining distance has single track trails and gravel roads. The course is 13.25 miles long, so be prepared to go just a tad longer than you would for another half marathon. The course is the same as the 10k course for the first 3.1 miles but will then turn right onto SE Leeks High Road and proceed to the private Wilder Trails. Courses will be well marked with flour, signs, and tape. There will be no aid stations for the 5k, 2 aid stations for the 10k, and 5 aid stations for the Half Marathon. The aid stations will be stocked with water and Gatorade. Check out the course maps and descriptions here.

All participants will get a beautiful custom Finisher Medal, personalized bibs (if you register by 12/15,) some delicious Rogue Clam Chowder and 1 beer or hot apple cider.

Last year over 65% of the participants took the plunge into the ocean. Which percentage will you fall into?
