If the name of this race isn’t enough to get you to sign up for Run For Your Nuts, perhaps the festive atmosphere will convince you to get in an early December race. Run For Your Nuts 5K is held during the Mt. Angel Hazelnut Festival and German Holiday Market. The course meanders through the quaint town of Mt. Angel on a variety of terrain. Expect pavement, gravel road, trail, and sidewalks as you encounter a couple of good hills, some flat running, and a nice easy downhill towards the end – where you can really “put the hammer down,” as a friend of mine likes to say.
When you reach the finish line, your run will be rewarded with a bag of local hazelnuts. Yes, you really do Run For Your Nuts! You will finish (and start) at the Mt. Angel Festhalle, where the German Holiday Market is being held, so you really should take some time to check out the vendors inside. You can purchase (and sample) all things hazelnut and many other items from wines, to homemade baked goods, to garden art, handmade knives, and so much more.
This small town 5K has become a bit of a tradition with my group of running friends. We’ve run it for the past 2 years and plan to be there again this December. It’s casual, festive, has a fun name, and Mt. Angel has some great little German themed restaurants for lunch afterwards. When you register for this race, make sure to purchase the $10 race shirt – as it’s usually a fun, nutty, must-have tech tee. See you in Mt. Angel!
