Kickin’ It in the Salming Speed 6

Portland_Oregon_Senior_Photographer_©ElleMPhotography-2305

Run Oregon received a pair of Salming Speed 6 in a women’s size 8.5. Kelly, also a size 8.5 felt that they ran a bit small and passed along to me. While I typically wear a size 8 running shoe, I found that the size 8.5 was right on the money, so consider this when ordering your pair.

Look:

Taste in shoes varies widely and while my daughter thought the colors on this particular pair were a bit strong, I love the look. My running shoes have been mostly black and hot pink for the past 10 years, so why not throw in a little hot yellow. I wore them when competing in the Why Racing Triathlon Festival and my friends said I was easy to spot during the run. The other color available is pictured below. Feel:

For distance running I wear a stability shoe, so this shoe was super light for my shorter training runs. It is roomy in the toe box to accommodate wider feet. I added my own insets for a better fit. This shoe is comfortable and breathable.

Function:

The Salming Speed 6 is a race capable shoe that is responsive in weight, flexibility and energy return. The Speed 6 is a trim 170 grams/6 ounces.

Compared to other shoes the market the shoe stack is shorter than average. The center of the heel is 22mm and 16 mm at the ball of the foot, giving the shoe 6mm of drop, which makes the shoe feel very minimal. The Salming doesn’t sacrifice cushioning with the shorter stack though. Salming combines two types of midsole cushioning in the Speed 6 called Recoil and RecoilR technology which absorbs negative impact forces and releases a higher rebound energy effect in the toe off phase.

Another feature of the Salming shoes, and the Speed 6, is their 62/75° technology. The 62/75° feature assures that the shoe bends in exactly the right places, stimulating the foot’s natural lateral and forward movements. The 62 refers to the point of the shoe that represents the ball of your foot, which should be at 62% of the shoe. The 75 refers to the “ballet line” which is a 75 degree line that starts at the 62% mark.

Conclusions:

If you like a light, fast running shoe then I would recommend the Salming 6. If you are new to the brand, you may want to try a half size larger than you typically wear.
