If you like to do it all, the Girlfriends Triathlon and Fitness Festival is the event for you. In beautiful Vancouver, Washington, this race offers so many options of races that there is something for everyone. Throughout the weekend you can run, swim, and/or bike whatever distance you have been aiming for. If you are attending the full festival, on August 18th the event is kicked off with a kid’s triathlon at 6pm. On Saturday, August 19th, 2017, the races offered are female only 5K and 10K Road Race as well as female only Sprint Triathlon, Sprint Duathlon, and Sprint AquaBike Race. The triathlon, duathlon, and AquaBike Race all offer the option of team or individual. Finally, on Sunday, August 20th, 2017, there is a a co-ed Sprint & OlympicTriathlon, Duathlon & AquaBike race. The registration of any of these races comes with a shirt, medal, and bag of goodies.
With the start of the kid triathlons on Friday, they offer two different age groups. The first one is called the “mini tri” and is for kids 10 years old and below. An hour later the “kids tri” starts and is for 11-16 year olds.
As far as the “girlfriend only” races on Saturday go, the course is flat and said to be the most gorgeous triathlon course in the Northwest, with stunning views of the Columbia River, Vancouver Lake, and gorgeous mountains. The swim portion of the triathlon is a down current on the Columbia River. Great for all swimming levels, beginners can feel more comfortable knowing the edge is right next to them and they are able to take breaks if needed. Swimmers are able to wear life vests, floaties or whatever they would like to feel safe. Also, any kind of swim stroke is fine and wetsuits are not required. After the swim, swimmers will walk back to the swim start to continue on to the bike portion of the race. The bike part of the race will 12 flat miles along country roads. Mountain bikes and road bike are both allowed and helmets are required. Finally, the run portion is a flat 3.1 miles out and back.
The duathlon follows the same bike and run potion as the triathlon, however, you start with the 5K and then bike and return to finish the 5K a second time.
The AquaBike Race starts at a separate heat and will complete just the swim and bike portion of the triathlon before finishing and receiving the finisher medal.
All of the sprint race options have bathrooms and water along the course.
After the race, stay for a post-race party and celebration complete with music, food, and beverages. Deschutes Brewery will be onsite to reward racers with delicious brews. There is also a race expo with samples for racers to enjoy.
This race is put on by WHY Racing Event and benefits the Pink Lemonade Project, which works to educate, support and empower people affected by breast cancer.
