Race Preview: 2017 Get Your Rear In Gear 5k (Portland)

The Get Your Rear In Gear 5k at Portland’s Mount Tabor on August 5th is part of a nationwide series of runs that raises money and awareness for colon cancer. Only lung cancer kills more Americans each year than colon cancer, but with early detection and regular screenings, colon cancer is preventable, treatable, and beatable. The morning starts with opening ceremonies at 9am, followed by the kids fun run at 9:15. The chip timed 5k start at 9:30. The course starts near the parking lot by the picnic area and information center. It takes you up to the summit on paved paths, then loops down again and around the reservoir back to the start. The elevation gain from the start to the summit is just 130ft, but since it’s happening over just half a mile, it can seem steep.

After the race, stick around for refreshments, race awards, and fundraiser awards. The day also includes the opportunity to honor survivors and remember those lost to colon cancer.
